Our first scored IOM event of the year is now in the record books. Despite mirror pond conditions at Blue Lake, we managed to complete seven races. We had seven boats in the water and I believe everyone left happy except Jay who had a problem with his winch in the second race and had to retire. He collected our annual dues ($25 each) so I hope he does not drown his sorrows by spending it all on booze. On a positive note, we got to see Morgan’s new Lintel MMX. It sailed sweet and fast. He will sail it in Texas next weekend at the Blow Out. I also brought a new boat, a Bantock Fractal, but it sailed like it was still in the box…or maybe it was just me.

The best thing about the event was the ever-growing parity in skipper abilities. Sure, we have a long way to go but everyone is getting better and this is especially true for the less experienced. A good example was Curt’s second place finish. In addition, four different people scored bullets. Eric had three.

The first training session for our club is coming up. The session will be held at 3:00 pm at Ron’s house on 3805 NE Davis St, Portland. There will be a pizza for snacks but you have to bring your own refreshments. We will be talking about racing rules, race tactics, boat tuning. There will be an IOM and a Victoria to practice tuning. We had a good sail today at Blue Lake. It didn’t rain, the temperature was comfortable and despite the wind coming out of the South causing fluky conditions, we got some nice puffs. We had seven IOMs and raced from 12:30 to 3:30. It was relaxed racing and we changed boats from time to time. What was impressive is the parity we have begun to enjoy at OMYC. In the past we have seen the same members dominate our events. This is changing. Chris as expected took honors but the racing, from top to bottom, was much closer. Our new IOM skippers Lynn and Russ sailed exceptionally well. Russ won a bullet. Lynn got a third and was close at the finishes. I believe Eric was the first to round the windward mark the most times. Curt did okay except for a few brain cramps. Both George and I had a lot of solid races. This is all very good and makes racing much more interesting.
This may be our last IOM event of the year. We have one scheduled for November but the weather is a major issue. Also we are nearing holidays which require family commitments. Chris and I will query you guys via Email next month to see if there is enough interest(and Curt is willing to set up the course). If there is interest we will sail.

Howdy all, as Ron said the weather was rather pleasant for what was forecast and the winds were FLUKE-Y-OUSE. The leaders were like the wind, if your ahead now wait a minute and you were not. Today was a day that made you concentrate on your tell tails – if you don’t have them GET EM! Lately I have been making mine out of VHS tape. I use scotch brite pad to scuff up both sides to try and keep them from sticking to the sails. If you scuff too much you take the black off and you cant see them, go softly. For the jib tell tales I cut them in
half lengthwise. They need to be back about 30 – 40 % from the leading edge of the jib. Same with the main if you wish them on the main. I prefer only one on the main on the leach to tell me if I have the sails IN too far (stalling the sails). Ron is the IOM Captain but since it seems I am the only on that can get the grease pencil off the score card I have the score card so hear are the scores for today. George got them through the magic program to get to the end result. (10 races recorded)

Per OMYC 2012 SCHED we have 3 more dates on the shed:
Oct 28 – Victoria scored/IOM fun sail
Nov 11 – IOM scored/Victoria fun sail
Nov 25 – Victoria scored/IOM fun sail
I personally will be in Seattle on the weekend of Oct 27-28 to race with the Seattle IOM club on the 27th and with the Seattle Victoria club on the 28th. As Ron mentioned you will be getting E-Mails to take some poles (more poles!!) on possible turn out for these sailing dates. As the year draws to an end you might be also tabulating what was good this year, what was bad this year. What you were hoping for, what you might like to see next year. (too much sailing, not enough sailing, location of sailing, ect). Our annual club business meeting will probably be announced in the next month or so, those kind of ideas are what this meeting is all about.
On the 30th of Sept was an occasion that was fun and totally unplanned for me. My Daughter came with me to the lake to sail my Victoria in the racing. I was bringing my IOM for last checks before the Cranberry Caper. Also Morgan had the same idea and his daughter was present and sailing his Victoria while he sailing his IOM. AND ALSO Lynn Was out with his daughter!!.
—So an idea I have is – one, maybe 2 sailing dates be designated Family and Friends day! Perhaps a small BBQ, brings your kids, friends, spouse, mistress, gerbils and coach them into putting new scuff marks on each other. (Band-Aids not provided).
Just an idea – to run up the flag pole.

This was an IOM scored event. The report of the IOM Captain follows:

“We had a good turnout in spite of the sizzling hot weather and light fluky winds. It seems when the mercury gets to 100 the wind tends to move vertical rather than horizontal. Seven IOM skippers (Eric, George, Chip, Chris, Herb, Lynn and yours truly) braved the heat. Chip Allen joined us sporting his new(he built it from a kit) Azetone. It is a beautiful boat. Chip is a good skipper and has sailed off and on with the Club for the last ten years. We hope to see more of him.
Because of the fluky winds, taking the the wrong side of the course or missing a shift was a disaster. As a result we had everyone in the lead at one time or another. Congratulations go to Chip and Eric. They won their first bullets in a scored event and will each receive the coveted OMYC Bullet Glass. I do not have the final outcome but it appears Chris took honors. I think Chip and George fought it out for second.
As a side note Chris experimented with his new buoy system….and it works. It allows us from shore to adjust the start line. No time wasted jumping in the chase boat to move the buoys. Can add hours of sailing time over a weekend(Nationals) if the wind is shifty and the RD is anal retentive. Another thing. My RMG winch crashed before I even got the boat in the water. The travel was spastic. It ripped my self tensioning drum to shreds. And I hope there is no damage to the boat. This is the fourth RMG winch to crash in our Club in the last year It is unfortunate the expensive, and so called Cadillac of the industry, is failing Club members. Luckily, Eric brought an extra boat(Old Pale Ale) which I sailed.

“Hi fellows,
Great sail Sunday 1ST July at Blue-Lake. Regret Ron’s starting time seen only three boats on the line (and those scores been disregarded on the board).
At my age driving (with wife) from Hillsboro and start ON TIME, everyone on our IOM roster should be able to accomplish the ON-TIME SCHEDULE. Regret having to stop racing this Point Event due to the loss of my radio box lid. One forgets things getting older. Next time I fasten the string on this lid rather on my finger. Lost a place or two in RANKING BY TAKING THIS PICTURES.

Cecily communicated that this image this image was just featured on a website in the UK for iphone photography.

Looking at this photo and looking at her other photos on flickr, I thoroughly enjoyed her “take” in photography. Cecily is interested in taking photos of the Hood River Carnage in July. That would be interesting to see.
