The Thunder Tiger “Victoria” has become the most popular class of sailboat in our club. It is low cost, sails well, looks good, and is just plain fun to sail. Since this is a one design racing class the emphasis is on sailing skill and not on boat design.
The Victoria is one of the latest entries in the AMYA one design fleet. She is a good performer for experienced sailors and an excellent boat for entry level sailors. She is available as a complete kit, manufactured by the Thunder Tiger Model Company and distributed world wide. Some modifications to kit can be made to achieve full performance of this boat. At 31 inches (780 mm) long, with an overall rigged height of 54 inches, this 4.5 lb. ‘heavyweight’ can travel everywhere fully rigged in most vehicles. It can be tuned to correctly sail in winds over well over 20kts. The Victoria will sail with 8 inches water, and is capable of cruising through most weed conditions. Recommended is a two channel radio and a sail winch of approx 130 oz/in torque with 180 degrees of travel. Total investment is under $200, race ready modifications about $250 for a total of $450.
Where to Get One?:
The kit is available through local hobby shops like Tammie’s Hobbies in Beaverton. It is also available by mail order from places like Tower Hobbies and Major Hobby. There is always used boats for sale. Check our “For Sale” section for more information.
